Kocharyan warns Pashinyan against post-election 'illegality'

Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan warned on Wednesday that any attempt by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to cling to power through “illegal” means after this month’s parliamentary election could trigger major political unrest.

“I do not think he would take such a risk, because it could lead to revolutionary consequences,” Kocharyan told reporters during a campaign visit to the southern town of Meghri when asked whether Pashinyan might seek to force fresh nationwide elections if defeated at the polls.

Kocharyan, who heads the opposition Hayastan alliance contesting the June 7 vote, said tensions in the country remained high after a divisive election campaign.

“Society is heated after the elections, passions are inflamed and the electorates of different political forces are mobilised,” he said.

“In such circumstances, resorting to this kind of illegality would be extremely risky. He would bring great trouble upon himself," Kocharyan added.
