Strong Armenia candidate warns of sovereignty risks ahead of June 7 elections

Gohar Meloyan, a member of the Strong Armenia party, marked Republic Day with a stark warning that the country faces "serious threats" under the current leadership.

In remarks marking the May 28 holiday, Meloyan recalled the decisive battles of Sardarapat, Bash Aparan and Gharakilisa in 1918, victories that preserved Eastern Armenia and enabled the birth of the First Republic. She cited former Prime Minister Hovhannes Kajaznuni, who once described May 28 as “the greatest holiday in our history” and envisioned it as a day of reverence for all Armenians.

Meloyan argued that Armenia’s sovereignty is under pressure, stressing that Azerbaijan is demanding Yerevan renounce its Declaration of Independence, branding it “conflict-prone”, and pushing for constitutional changes.

“Today, we are facing major threats due to the current government policies,” she said, framing the upcoming June 7 parliamentary elections as a pivotal contest for national sovereignty.
