Opposition says Armenian ruling party's reelection unlikely amid high voter turnout

An Armenian opposition lawmaker said on Sunday that strong voter turnout in the country’s parliamentary elections could significantly undermine the ruling Civil Contract party’s prospects of securing another term in power.

“The level of participation we are seeing today suggests that the ruling party’s chances of winning another mandate are rapidly diminishing,” Ishkhan Saghatelyan, an MP from the opposition Hayastan alliance and a senior member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, told reporters.

Saghatelyan said opposition observers were documenting electoral violations across the country and would later assess whether any irregularities had an impact on the outcome of the vote.

“Our teams are monitoring polling stations nationwide and recording every reported violation,” he said. “We will evaluate the scale of those incidents and determine the extent to which they may have affected the results.”

At the same time, Saghatelyan credited voters for the high turnout, arguing that strong public participation could make it difficult for the ruling party to secure reelection.

“Given the high voter turnout, I believe the ruling party’s chances of remaining in power are slim,” he said.
