Armenia election results may be recounted across Yerevan, CEC chief says

Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) may conduct a full recount of ballots in Yerevan following Sunday’s parliamentary elections, its chairman said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after parliamentary debates on the 2025 state budget, CEC Chairman Vahagn Hovakimyan said final election results will be released on June 14.

Hovakimyan said discrepancies identified so far were limited, noting that at five of Armenia’s 2,005 polling stations, vote-count protocols were accurate but errors occurred during data entry.

“Some lines were skipped during the entry process. It was a human-factor issue,” he said.

He said the preliminary nature of the reported results reflects the ongoing verification process.

“That is why they are called preliminary results, because they still need to be clarified,” Hovakimyan said. “Recounts are being conducted at numerous polling stations.”

The commission has received relatively few formal requests for recounts, he added. According to Hovakimyan, requests have come from the three main opposition parties as well as the Wings of Unity party.

Hovakimyan said election authorities are considering a comprehensive recount in Yerevan after a parliamentary candidate from Wings of Unity requested one.

“We have a situation in Yerevan where we may recount all votes,” he said. “The candidate wanted that, and they have until 2 p.m. on Friday to complete the recount process.”

Asked about actions taken by the Prosecutor General’s Office in connection with the election, Hovakimyan said it would be inappropriate for the head of the election commission to comment on the prosecutor’s activities.
