Body of missing 7-year-old girl recovered from river in Armenia

Rescue workers have recovered the body of a 7-year-old girl who went missing after falling into the Pambak River in northern Armenia, authorities said on Wednesday.

The body of Nare Martirosyan was found at about 9:30 a.m. roughly 500 meters (1,640 feet) downstream from where she was believed to have fallen into the river on June 15, according to Armenia’s Rescue Service.

A large-scale search operation involving rescue personnel, police officers, divers and volunteers had been underway since the girl was reported missing on Monday afternoon. Drones, boats and other specialized equipment were also deployed.

Local residents told Armenian media that the girl fell into the river while crossing a pipe over the water. Her 13-year-old sister reportedly attempted to help her but slipped and also fell into the river.
