Armenian opposition seeks Constitutional Court intervention over election results

Lawyer Aram Vardevanyan, a member of the Strong Armenia party, announced that his political team has formally petitioned Armenia’s Constitutional Court to invalidate the results of the June 7 parliamentary elections, arguing that significant irregularities warrant judicial intervention.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Vardevanyan said the submission consists of an extensive 84-page legal filing outlining the party’s objections to the election outcome.

“We firmly believe that the election results should be declared invalid,” he said.

Vardevanyan emphasized that the Constitutional Court, as the sole authority empowered to adjudicate electoral disputes, has three potential courses of action under Armenian law: annul the Central Electoral Commission’s decision and invalidate the election results, order a second round of voting, or establish an alternative procedure for the allocation of parliamentary seats.

“We are particularly advocating for two outcomes,” Vardevanyan said. “Either the court should mandate a second round of elections or declare the election results invalid.”

The Constitutional Court has not yet publicly commented on the petition.
