Armenian opposition MP reacts to Aliyev’s remarks

Armenian opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan on Wednesday questioned Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's commitment to a lasting peace, citing recent remarks in which Aliyev said the Azerbaijani people would never forget what he described as actions carried out by Armenian forces against Azerbaijanis and their cities.

"What should be inferred from Aliyev's statement when he publicly declares that the Azerbaijani people will never forget the actions committed by Armenia's occupation forces against them and their cities?" he wrote on Facebook 

"Is this the rhetoric of a leader whose country is genuinely moving toward peace or has already achieved it?" he added.

Abrahamyan, a member of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, argued that Azerbaijan had pressured the Armenian government into abandoning its previous positions and expectations while continuing to advance a politically motivated narrative.

According to Abrahamyan, Baku is seeking to elevate artificially constructed myths into a permanent component of its political agenda.

The opposition lawmaker also sharply criticized Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, referring to him as a "local dictator" and accusing him of sacrificing Armenian national interests for short-term political objectives.

"The local dictator is motivated by the prospect of gaining a few more pennies, while Azerbaijanis are turning their demands and ambitions into a lasting threat at the expense of Armenian interests," Abrahamyan wrote.
