Armenians call for balanced foreign policy, warn against fallout from strained Russia ties

Armenians interviewed in a public opinion survey voiced concern over the potential consequences of deteriorating relations between Armenia and Russia, arguing that a further decline in ties could inflict significant economic damage, particularly on the country's agricultural sector.

One respondent dismissed suggestions that Armenian farmers could readily replace the Russian market with neighboring alternatives.

“Forget the idea that Armenia can export its agricultural products to Azerbaijan or Turkey,” the respondent said. “Farmers will be left standing in the scorching heat with their produce, trying to sell it in markets such as Meymandar or Malatya. With every passing hour, the quality of the produce declines, and so does its price.”

When asked what Armenia could gain from worsening relations with Russia, respondents overwhelmingly said they saw little reason for optimism.

One woman urged the Armenian government to cultivate constructive relations with all countries while ensuring the nation is not drawn into the geopolitical agendas of larger powers.

“Armenia should pursue a balanced foreign policy,” she said. “We have many compatriots living in Russia, and their interests should not be overlooked. We also have Armenian diaspora communities around the world, and the government has a responsibility to consider their welfare as well.”

Another participant questioned the feasibility of expanding exports to Europe, expressing skepticism about the logistics involved.

“How are they going to reach Europe—through Turkey?” the respondent asked.

An elderly man echoed those concerns, pointing to the shortcomings of efforts to diversify export markets.

“They say 17,000 flowers were exported to Europe, but another one million had to be thrown away,” he said.
