Armenian police arrest two over illegal drug possession

Armenian police have arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of illegal drug possession after officers allegedly found 30 packages containing about 49 grams of marijuana during a search of their vehicle.

The arrests followed operational intelligence suggesting the pair were involved in the illegal possession and sale of narcotics, police said on Friday.

Officers from the Community Police's Marash Division detained the 35-year-old man and 44-year-old woman at about 6:50 a.m. on June 23 on Garegin Hovsepyan Street in Yerevan. The suspects were taken into custody, while the Toyota they were driving was impounded pending further investigation.

A criminal investigation was subsequently launched by investigators of Yerevan's Kentron and Nor Nork-Marash districts. During a court-authorized search of the vehicle on June 25, investigators recovered 30 packages containing a total of approximately 49 grams of marijuana.

The investigation is underway.
