Snakes become more active in summer heat, experts urge caution

Rising summer temperatures are bringing snakes out into the open, increasing the chances of encounters with people during outdoor recreation and farm work, authorities warn.

“Snakes typically enter residential areas not to live, but to hunt,” said Roman Khachatryan, deputy commander of the Rescue Service’s 4th unit under the Interior Ministry. “They are intelligent reptiles. If we don’t harm them, they won’t attack humans.”

Officials advise keeping a safe distance of about 2 to 2.5 meters if a snake is spotted, remaining calm, and avoiding sudden movements. If a snake is found inside a home or yard, residents are urged not to attempt removal themselves but to call emergency services at 112 for professional assistance.

In the event of a snakebite, specialists recommend drinking plenty of fluids and seeking immediate medical care.

Authorities stress that while vigilance is essential during the snakes’ active season, it is equally important to recognize their ecological role. “Snakes are vital for maintaining environmental balance. Responsible behavior is often the best protection,” the ministry noted.
