In a message marking Armenia’s First Republic Day on May 28, former Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan stressed the importance of statehood and the need for national unity.
“May 28 embodies the living spirit of Armenian statehood,” Tatoyan wrote. “It represents our sacred pledge to preserve, strengthen and cherish our independence.”
He reflected on the events of 1918, when, after centuries of foreign domination, the Armenian people declared their independence. The battles of Sardarapat, Bash Aparan, and Karakilisa, he noted, were not merely military victories, but “powerful expressions of an unbreakable spirit".
“These victories remind us that statehood and independence are values that must be protected with unwavering commitment,” Tatoyan emphasized.
“Today, just as 106 years ago, we need national consolidation to confront the challenges – free of internal hostility and united in defense of our greatest protector: the Armenian state. My deepest respect goes to all those who gave their lives for this day. Happy May 28!" reads the message.
