Gas explosion in Chambarak: Some apartments still habitable, says deputy interior minister

A gas leak caused the deadly explosion and partial collapse of a residential building in Chambarak, Deputy Interior Minister Armen Mkrtchyan announced at a cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Five people were killed and ten others injured in the explosion that ripped through an apartment block in the northeastern Armenian town on Wednesday.

Preliminary seismic assessments indicate that some apartments remain structurally sound, though residents have not yet returned to their homes due to safety concerns. Temporary shelters and basic necessities have been provided to the affected people, though most residents declined the offer. Mkrtchyan said only two women are currently staying at a guesthouse.

A criminal investigation has been launched and police are guarding the site to prevent property loss. Authorities plan a full damage assessment to determine possible compensation.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed condolences to those affected.
