Opposition MP accuses Armenian leadership of retribution against opponents

Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has accused the Armenian authorities of consistent retribution against their opponents.

His comments came after a Yerevan court ordered businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan to be remanded in pre-trial custody for two months late on Wednesday. Karapetyan faces charges of making public calls to seize power in the country rejected by him as politically motivated.

"We've been living in this reality for seven years," Abrahamyan wrote on Facebook on Thursday. "Some continue to fight to put an end to it, while others become complicit in the whims of the ruling regime.”

He further criticized the government's conduct, saying it is operating with a "no-holds-barred" approach.

"Law enforcement agencies and the judiciary have strayed from the legal framework and are instead carrying out political orders," the MP added.
