Minister promises support for livestock farmers after backlash over meat price surge in Armenia

Armenian Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan has announced plans for a new government support program aimed at livestock farmers following mounting criticism over a surge in beef prices.

In a statement released on Saturday, Papoyan said the “long-awaited” initiative would be introduced soon to assist citizens engaged in animal husbandry.

The announcement comes amid growing public concern over the cost of meat, with beef prices exceeding 5,000-6,000 drams per kilogram in some areas.

However, the minister’s remarks have prompted a wave of scepticism online. Many users questioned the effectiveness of previous support measures, arguing that they were often poorly targeted, short-term and at times counterproductive.

Some farmers expressed concern that new policies could unintentionally reduce livestock numbers further, a problem that occurred in the past. Others pointed to structural challenges facing the sector, including competition from imported pork, which they claim is undermining domestic pig farming.

Critics also highlighted unresolved issues such as the continued import of powdered milk, which they argue has contributed to a decline in cattle numbers and weakened local production.

While some welcomed the prospect of government intervention, they stressed the need for a carefully designed and sustainable program.
