Armenian top court urged to uphold constitution amid election challenge

A member of the Prosperous Armenia Party told the Constitutional Court on Saturday that the judiciary must restore constitutional supremacy rather than render political judgments, as hearings continued over challenges to the June 7 parliamentary election results.

Speaking on behalf of the opposition group, Elinar Vardanyan argued that alleged violations during the campaign, including the misuse of administrative resources, criminal prosecutions and inaction by electoral bodies, formed a chain of abuses that compromised the integrity of the vote.

She contended that thousands of citizens were deprived of the opportunity to reassert their choice due to state errors, stressing that responsibility cannot be shifted onto voters themselves. Vardanyan underscored that the court ruling carries weight beyond partisan interests, framing it as pivotal for safeguarding public trust in Armenia’s electoral system.

“The decision is not about one political force, but about protecting the voice of the electorate and the will of the people,” she said.
