Activist to discuss Pashinyan's impeachment in parliament

Civic and political activist Edgar Ghazaryan, the leader of the We Are Awake movement, visited Armenia’s National Assembly on Thursday to discuss the launch of impeachment proceedings against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The meeting will be held within the framework of public consultations with the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the meeting, Ghazaryan said he expects all committee members to attend the meeting. He also expressed concerns over Committee Chairman Vladimir Vardanyan’s simultaneous roles in two bodies: the Armenia-Artsakh Inter-Parliamentary Commission and the Constitutional Reform Commission.

Ghazaryan criticized Vardanyan’s membership in the Constitutional Reform Commission, which is chaired by the justice minister, calling it institutionally problematic.

“The commission is headed by the minister of justice, so it’s unclear why a sitting MP would serve under a minister in such a capacity. Even if he agreed to it voluntarily, it needs to be justified. Typically, ministers report to the parliament, not the other way around," the activist stated.
