Yerevan district head resigns

The head of Yerevan's Nor Nork district formally announced his resignation on Monday.

Speaking at a Yerevan City Hall meeting, Tigran Ter-Margaryan, a member of the pro-Western Republic (Hanrapetutyun) Party, cited “recent provocations” and the subsequent public discourse as the reason for his decision.

The move comes after the official assaulted civic activist Artur Chakhoyan along with his staff members on April 30.

"Given the speculation surrounding my name and concerns that I might interfere with ongoing legal proceedings, I am ending my tenure effective today," he said, expressing gratitude to Republic Party leader Aram Sargsyan for the trust placed in him.

Addressing Nor Nork residents, Ter-Margaryan vowed to ensure all promises made during his term will be fulfilled.

Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan welcomed the decision.
